How to Make Easy-Peasy Totes
My first attempts at sewing as a young doe didn't fare so well. Tedious tasks do not mesh well with my impatient nature! However, as I've gotten older, my patience has grown (at least a little bit), and now sewing is a joy for me. There are, however, times when I just don't want to follow the rules.
What rules? Oh, little things like measuring, for example.
Some of my first projects during my return to sewing were done by just "eyeballing" it, or using the fabric as it's own guide by folding it in half. These "easy-peasy totes" were born from my...laziness!

First-Ever tote. About a 16" square with canvas handles. Self-lined. With stuff in it, it hangs really lop-sided. Gave it to Mom...Moms will love any handmade gift

Butterfly Toile Tote. Found this gorgeous fabric at a thrift store and had to do something with it. It's about 14" square. I didn't measure, just folded the fabric in a triangle to get even sides. Lined with a white silky polyester. Features an inner pocket while I worked on my fabulous skills

Army Bag. I love this one. Look closely and you can see that the camoflage fabric has green floral embroidery on it! I made this bag for a female friend serving in Afghanistan. I figured she should have something girly to match her BDUs. Again, no measuring. I folded the fabric in half and cut out a curvy shape. The bag is self-lined and has an inner pocket. Drawstring closure (drawstring and belt loops were made of same fabric)
I adored this little purse. Unfortunately, I'm a big purse kinda gal, so I sold this at a consignment shop. The fabric was from an old dress I bought at Target. The handles were canvas. Self-lined, button closure. I used the button closure from the dress! This was my first foray into pleating, which I created very unscientifically by pinching together some of the fabric, pinning it, and sewing it under the handles. Again, no measuring, I just folded the fabric in half for symmetry and cut out a curvy shape.
I liked this tote a lot too. Same concept as Army purse, but the fabric was from a vintage sheet from a thrift store! I lined it with the poly satin.
I hope this inspires you to think outside of...your measuring tape! Any thoughts? Please add them in the comments below. Ta Ta!

Okay...I'm a manly man through & through so I can't believe I'm commenting on these, but that is very creative. I love the idea that you're taking something old (and which was probably just gathering dust) and creating something entirely new and different from it. Pretty awesome.
