Ah...Relearning the Simple Things

I mentioned before that I'd be moving soon and I'm here to report...the move was successful!  The new house is great and the fuzzy babies seem to love it too!

Moving from the city to the suburbs requires a little adjusting however.  My new neighborhood is only 20 minutes from my old one and right by the airport, so it's hardly in the boonies.  However, my cell service is intermittent in the new house, and I don't have Internet access or a TV yet!  Yikes!

In my first week, I had to relearn some skills that I had "unlearned" through the frequent use of "technology".  I thought these might amuse you!

How to use a "landline".
The new house still had the old phone service connected and an old wall phone installed.  I had to pick up the handset and dial a phone #!  (I'm used to only using a cell phone where I just choose a name!)

How to use "snail mail" and a "mail box" with a flag.  I don't know the last time I received or paid a bill via regular mail.  Not only that, I forgot that you could put the little flag up on the mailbox and have outgoing mail taken by the mailman!  I haven't had such a luxury since living in my parents' home.

Using the library.  I buy all books online at Amazon.com or pick up a wi-fi signal with my laptop (when using the Internet).  Who knew you could go to the library (in my case, I can walk to it!) and use these services free???  (OK, i know, EVERYONE knew that one except me!)

Relearning how to live with the seasons.  Storm windows?  Vegetable garden?  Screen porches?  Oh my!

Appreciating trees for their shade and seeds.  There's a GORGEOUS Japanese maple tree in my front yard, just swelling with seeds...with a few babies scattered about!  I've only seen those at Home Depot before!   This maple also makes a lovely shady spot just begging for a picnic one day.

Using a phone book and a map.  During my first couple of days at the new house, I wanted to take my moving boxes to a recycling center, so I had to break out a phone book and find the Waste Management phone number.  I managed that much, then had to call them and ask for the nearest drop off point!  I didn't have the nerve to ask for directions, so I used the map in the phone book.  And all of this was done on a land line!  No computer, no gps!  Goodness.

Enjoying a glass of wine.  A glass of wine at the local Italian restaurant?  $3.75!  In the city it cost about 40% more to enjoy a glass during dinner.  Now I have an excuse to have TWO glasses LOL.

Wish me luck in the coming days...while I navigate an "attic" and attempt  to grow food and preserve it!

Congrats on the move! I am sure you will love your "country" place and will learn the ropes rapidly. Growing and preserving your own food will bring not only hours of healthy activity in the out-of-doors, but days and months of fine eating! When you pull something from a canning jar or the freezer in the middle of winter you will be able to think back to the day you picked it! I learned canning from my mother-in-law and there are many fine websites that will give you information on processes and safety. I make full use of my small freezer and food dehydrator, too. Best of luck!
